We've been working with this breed for some time now. We find the birds to be very inquisitive, friendly, and full of all of the natural instincts one could wish for in a domestic fowl. They are easy to handle, easy to raise, and seem to enjoy the company of humans. The hens are very good layers, and the males grow to a good table size. We have both the crested and non-crested birds in our breeding groups. We have established several unrelated breeding groups to help perpetuate this breed.
What We Breed For in the Swedish Flower Hen
In their native country, the Swedes have established a gene bank for their precious livestock breeds. This gene bank states that they will not preserve the genetic material of native landraces that have undergone any sort of selective breeding. So we will be breeding these birds the way they have been developed to this point in time - allowing the natural forces around them to determine whose genes will carry forward. With a few exceptions, of course. We do cull bad combs (sprigs, etc. as they should be a single-comb bird), poor layers, and any bird with leg or foot issues. Other than that, we will just watch the Flowers bloom!
